Searching for Louis Nye

Hi ho, MMMLogerinos!

"Hi ho, Steverino!" funny man Louis Nye, playing a hipster, used to greet the great Steve Allen during his Man on the Street interview segments of the Steven Allen Show back in the sixties. My parents and we three kids always gathered to watch the weekly show. Though Steve was our favorite, we loved Louis Nye's wacky portrayal of a weird city guy. I didn't know he was playing a hipster--come on, I lived in a tiny northwestern Arizona desert town and wouldn't have known cool if it bit me.

Another Louis Nye fan, Walter, emailed to ask if I knew where he could get a copy of Louis Nye's Hipster Trying to Swing a Loan routine. That was my first clue that Louis was doing a hipster back then. I suggested that Walter search Amazon, eBay and other sources. He wrote back to say that he found the album on eBay and it's called Here's Nye in Your Eye. Walter bought the album and says it's truly hilarious. He sent me a little snippet of the content:

Banker: Yes can I help you?
Hipster: I need you to lay some money on me.
Banker: I guess you want a loan. What kind of loan would you like?
Hipster: Well...what kind are you pushin'?
Banker: Well there's the auto loan the home improvement loan...
Hipster: Yeah, that's the one I want.
Banker: The home improvement loan, well what are you going to do to improve your home?
Hipster: I'm gonna get my old lady outta there!

Later in the bit...

Banker: What is your name?
Hipster: Lips Elliot
Banker : Your name is Lips? Now come on, what is your real name?
Hipster: Harold.
Banker: Ok, Harold Elliot.
Hipster: No man, Lips Harold.
Banker: That's a very strange name.
Hipster: That's why I changed it to Elliot.

Thanks so much, Walter, for this funny trip down memory lane.

Hi ho, Louis Nye, wherever you are!
